ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: Drawing inspiration from Western and Japanese animation, dreams, travel, and personal experience, Johnson-Moore treats painting as a language—one through which she explores memory, emotion, and her perception of the world. Her work invites viewers into vividly imagined environments shaped by narrative, atmosphere, and psychological nuance.

She works across watercolor, gouache, acrylic gouache, and paper collage. Watercolor allows her to construct immersive, intimate worlds, while gouache and acrylic gouache lend themselves to bold, graphic compositions that test the limits of color and contrast. In her collage practice, she incorporates patterned papers collected from around the world, layering fragments into new identities and alter egos. Artificial light—particularly neon—plays a recurring role in her compositions, reflecting her fascination with the emotional intensity of nighttime and the way images can speak louder than sound. Her work is defined by heightened color, high contrast, and dreamlike narrative elements that encourage viewers to construct their own stories within each painting.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Ana Johnson-Moore is a neo-surrealist painter born in Bucharest, Romania, and currently based in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Although she has been creating art since childhood, her artistic identity took fuller shape after relocating to Cape Cod in 2019.  Ana has exhibited in numerous juried shows across Cape Cod and has received multiple awards for excellence in art. In addition to her studio practice, she teaches at Cotuit Center for the Arts, Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and Falmouth Art Center. As an educator, she is committed to helping students discover art as a means of connection—both to the world around them and to themselves.
