The Nitrogen Removal and Headworks Upgrade Project will deliver the next generation of wastewater treatment to Barnstable’s Water Pollution Control Facility. This work will significantly reduce the facility’s average nitrogen concentration, cutting current levels in half. That reduction will help improve water quality within the Lewis Bay watershed.
The upgraded treatment process will also produce cleaner, higher-quality treated effluent overall, helping position the facility for future improvements and additional treatment opportunities as wastewater needs continue to evolve.
Construction commenced in the Fall of 2025 and is in full swing. Current activity includes: the walls of the new deoxygenation tank/aeration splitter structure being formed, as well as the beginnings of the Membrane Bio-Reactor Tanks, Process Building, Intermediate Pump Station, and Fine Screen Building. Other work includes site preparation for the fourth aeration tank and the new Headworks Building.
