The Barnstable/Hyannis Transformative Development Initiative (TDI) District was recently awarded a $125,000 TDI Local Grant from MassDevelopment. This grant will provide direct assistance to small businesses in downtown Hyannis, with $75,000 of the funds appropriated for the recently released Small Business Façade Improvement Grant Program and $50,000 for the next round of the Local Business Boost Program.

These programs were identified as priority initiatives through collaboration with community partners. Love Live Local and the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District (BID) worked with Town staff to secure grant funding and develop program guidelines.

Established by MassDevelopment in 2014, the TDI program is designed to promote economic growth and sustainability in the walkable commercial districts in Massachusetts’ Gateway Cities. Barnstable’s TDI District is located in Downtown Hyannis along Main Street, extending from Yarmouth Road in the East End to High School Road Extension.

In February 2022, Barnstable was selected by MassDevelopment to become a full time TDI District.  Because of the successful efforts of local businesses, residents, and civic groups to collaborate and support our local economy through the most difficult times over the past two years, Barnstable now receives full time technical assistance to provide on-the-ground economic development expertise, as well as access to a range of tools, including grants, to support local development and leverage investment in the downtown.

The Barnstable TDI group continues to work as a local partnership that includes businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to engage community members in economic development planning, implementation of the recently completed Downtown Action Strategy, enhancing the public realm, and attracting more public and private investment at the neighborhood level
