The January 5, 2022 School Committee meeting kicked off with Kirby Smith (Astronomy Teacher at Barnstable High School) and Katie Smith (6th grade Science Teacher at Barnstable Intermediate School) highlighting the BIS/BHS Joint Star Party in the BHS Cobb Astro Park. 6th graders were invited by the BHS Astronomy Club to join them in the Cobb Astro Park where the 6th graders displayed the work they had done on a project at school. They had to create a new technology or enhance a piece of technology that already existed to help with the exploration of Mars. Telescopes were set up and the 6th graders were excited to see the planets they had been researching and learning about in class.
Superintendent Mayo-Brown spoke about the Covid test kits that were distributed to students before the winter break and to staff the weekend before the return to school after the break. On returning to school on January 3, staff were given a 30-day supply of KN95 masks. These masks were given to every district in the Commonwealth.
The School Committee accepted the Barnstable High School Program of Studies for the 2022-2023 school year. The Committee approved the purchase of new spring athletic uniforms and new uniforms for the high school band. The Committee adopted the Town of Barnstable’s Energy Reduction Plan.
Vice Chair Bent gave an update on the Superintendent Search. Three candidates will be interviewed by the School Committee on Monday, January 10 starting at 4:00pm at the Barnstable Adult Community Center. The three candidate are:
- Dr. Sara Ahern, current Superintendent of Franklin Public Schools
- Dr. Scott Carpenter, current Superintendent of Monomoy Regional School District
- Dr. June Saba-Maguire, current Chief Academic Officer of Brockton Public Schools

On Wednesday, January 12, the School Committee with have a Special Meeting to discuss the candidates and vote to appointment the new Superintendent of Barnstable Public Schools. That public meeting will take place at 4:00pm in the Town Hall Hearing Room and be broadcast live on Ch. 18.
