BARNSTABLE CELEBRATES LABOR DAY WEEKEND WITH FIREWORKS AND BEACH DANCE PARTY 

Join the Town of Barnstable for a Second Summer Celebration and fireworks display to celebrate the unofficial end of Summer on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Rain Date: September 1, 2024). With school back in session, cooler nights and warmer water at the beaches, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time for residents to gather and celebrate the end of Summer on Cape Cod. Bring the family for a day of fun, including the Amplify POC Vendor Fair on the Hyannis Village Green, Movement Arts Cape Cod’s Dance and Movement Showcase at Aselton Park followed by a fireworks display over Lewis Bay in Hyannis Harbor to cap off the day. All activities are free, and the public is invited. 

EVENTS FOR THE FAMILY AND A DANCE PARTY ON THE WATERFRONT IN HYANNIS TO CELEBRATE SECOND SUMMER 

Movement Arts Cape Cod Showcase at Aselton Park kicks off at 5:00 PM, just after the Amplify POC Cape Cod Vendor Fair wraps up on the Hyannis Village Green. Move your body and get in the swing of things as eight professional dance and movement instructors show off their skills on the Aselton stage.  

Sue Landers – NIA (Instruction) Sue Landers is a licensed NIA instructor from Brewster. Blending the joy of dance, discipline of martial arts, mindfulness of somatics and universal spiritual principles, Nia is a body-centered movement technique that supports physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and well-being.  

Jacky Kotowski – LaBlast Dance Fitness (Instruction) LaBlast Dance Fitness is a blend of ballroom & Latin dance patterns and fitness. It’s easy to follow along and anyone can do it! 

Niki Kellett – Yoga (Instruction) Niki is a Certified 500-hour yoga teacher, including kids’ yoga, buti yoga, vinyasa, chair yoga, and restorative, as well as a Pilates instructor. 

Victoria Ariel of Dance Therapy 508 - Hip Hop (Instruction) Dance Therapy 508 is currently building a cultural dance education program as well as an adaptive dance program with classes you wouldn’t necessarily find in your traditional dance studio on Cape Cod. It’s a must see! 

Kayleen Christie – Egyptian Belly Dance (Instruction & Performance) Kayleen has been studying Egyptian Belly Dance for over 10 years. She fell in love with the art form because it promotes an inclusive and inviting environment. She firmly believes any woman can practice this style despite any preconceived notions regarding their age, weight or endurance capabilities.  As an instructor, Kayleen creates a fun and safe environment where anyone can learn this ancient art form that promotes confidence as well as happiness.   

Capoeira Besouro – Capoeira (Instruction & Performance) Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form combining dance, martial arts, rhythm, and movement. Disguised through music, it helps develop coordination, fitness, flexibility, and body awareness. 

Norah Bourbon – Pole, Lyra, Fire Dance (Performance) Dance and movement has always been a part of Norah’s life. Norah specializes in Pole Dance, Fire, Aerial Silks, Lyra, Flamenco, and Ballet.  Norah leads Soundbath and Sound Healing sessions at Nauset Beach, Hot Yoga Studio in Dennis, and at Masjah Studios in Harwich.  

Stephanie Ellis – Pole Dance(Performance) Stephanie lives in Orleans and runs a wildlife hospital. She has dedicated her entire life to the conservation of wildlife and is happiest surrounded by nature. Three years ago, she added pole fitness to her list of passions. “I had never been an athlete or a dancer. It has been an inspiring journey and progression. I am in my forties, and pole has given me strength, stamina and grace that I never envisioned. I feel grateful to have found a meaningful and fun way to get in shape; and feel sexy and confident. Age does not define you!”    

At 8:25 PM Kevin Matthews from iHeart Media will be joined by a special guest from the Barnstable Public School District as they countdown to Second Summer and the spectacular fireworks show over Lewis Bay (weather permitting). Approximate start time 8:30 PM. 

A Beach Dance Party will take place at Veterans Park Beach in collaboration with the Hyannis Yacht Club. DJ Ian Lee will host a beach dance party with fun and games for the whole family! The folks from KOFFEE and Y101 will be on hand with Andersen Windows. They’ll have prizes to give away and count down to Second Summer with a simulcast of the soundtrack broadcast across multiple stations. Get there early because parking is limited. It will be a great place to watch the fireworks. Bring your own picnic (no alcohol permitted) or visit one of the food or ice cream trucks. 

Fireworks Viewing at Kalmus Beach – the parking lot will open to the public at 4:00 PM for free parking. The Little Sandwich Shoppe Concessions Stand will stay open late and there will be novelty vendors selling light-up toys. Parking is limited so please arrive early to ensure you get a space. 

The HyArts Artist Shanties will be open during the day at Bismore Park (Ocean Street) and the Harbor Overlook. Main Street Hyannis has many dining and shopping opportunities. 

No alcohol/tobacco/cannabis is allowed on town property. Please be respectful of private property and park your vehicle in one of the locations mentioned below or other authorized location. 

WEATHER OR WILDLIFE RELATED FACTORS MIGHT POSTPONE OR CANCEL THE FIREWORKS 

Due to the uncertainty of both weather and wildlife events that may occur, a “Rain Date” may be necessary (for Fireworks only). In this case, an announcement will be issued by 10:00 AM on August 31st, and will be broadcast on the MyBarnstable App, social networking pages as well as local news media. 

 

 

PARKING & TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS 

Free Parking at the public beaches will be available after 4:00 PM until the spaces are filled. There are several municipal lots in downtown Hyannis where free parking is available for up to 6 hours and 2-hour maximum on Main Street and Old Colony Road. There is also Pay to Park at the Ocean Street and Bismore Park area lots.  

A Parking Ban will be in effect South of South Street (Ocean Street, Old Colony Boulevard, Gosnold Street and all streets running off of Gosnold Street) from 5:00 PM to midnight to allow for pedestrian access. Parking will be available in the North Street parking lots and Town Hall parking lot. Tow Away Zones Strictly Enforced and carpooling is suggested.   

Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority (CCRTA) has hourly parking available (with the first 30 minutes free) at the Hyannis Transportation Center. Long term parking is also available for daily rates. CCRTA will be operating on its regular routes with a loop every 45 minutes throughout the day. Service will be extended past normal operating hours as needed to accommodate riders following the fireworks. For more information and service routes, please visit capecodrta.org.
