Kickoff Presentation + Open House featuring Jeff Speck

The Walkable City author will be speaking about his experience in transforming cities around the world and what this means for reimagining the downtown Hyannis street network and streetscape in the coming months.

The Town is hosting this event to kick off a project to develop a new vision for Main Street and the streets nearby. This might include concepts such as:

• Two-way traffic on Main Street
• Reorganizing the “Six Points” intersection

The GREAT STREETS DOWNTOWN HYANNIS: A Walkable Heart for Cape Cod Project recently commenced with the intention of completion in late spring 2023. This exciting project will re-envision how Hyannis Main Street and the surrounding streets and intersections are designed and how they function.  As part of this early phase of the project, the Town of Barnstable invites you to participate in the first of a series of public meetings. These meetings will kick off with an exciting presentation by the urbanist and Walkable City author, Jeff Speck.  He will speak about his experience in transforming cities around the world and what this means for reimagining the downtown Hyannis street network and streetscape.  He will then be joined by the Stantec Consulting project team for a project “open house”.

The event is scheduled for November 15, 2022 at 7 PM (presentation) and 8 PM (open house) at the Hearing Room at Town Hall, 367 Main Street, Hyannis MA 02601.   If you want to help shape the future of downtown Hyannis, put this date on your calendar!

This project will look at the existing Downtown Hyannis traffic network and streetscape and create buildable concepts for Downtown Hyannis that emphasize walkability, enhance the public realm, focus on safety, and support multiple transportation options downtown.

Each member of the community can be a part of designing the Hyannis streetscape by participating in the current stage of planning and future opportunities as they become available.

The Town of Barnstable retained the services of Jeff Speck (Speck & Associates) and Stantec Consulting Services to lead and execute the project. The project is being coordinated with the Town’s Planning & Development and Public Works Departments.

Your input is critical to successfully complete the transportation study. The Town looks forward to seeing you on November 15th If you have any questions regarding this meeting please contact Elizabeth Jenkins, Director of Planning and Development at 508-862-4678.
