In late November 2022, the GREAT STREETS DOWNTOWN HYANNIS: A Walkable Heart for Cape Cod project kicked off a week-long charrette lead by Jeff Speck (Speck & Associates) and Stantec Consulting Services.  This team was retained by the Town of Barnstable to update the overall vision for how Hyannis Main Street and the surrounding streets and intersections could be improved to emphasize walkability, enhance the public realm, improve traffic flow and safety, and support multiple transportation options downtown.  The first dynamic and engaging week of public participation included a large public educational session and open house, data collection, and a series of meetings with stakeholders.

The project has now entered its second phase and remains on its trajectory of being finalized in late spring. Following the valuable input shared in November, and through online engagement opportunities on the project website, the team has developed a series of early street design concepts. These will be shared at a presentation and open house which the Town of Barnstable invites you to participate in. The concepts shown will demonstrate how various streets and intersections in Hyannis could look once redesigned, including the potential for restoring two-way traffic flow downtown.  There will be a brief, formal presentation followed by an opportunity to ask the consultants questions and provide feedback on the designs.

The event is scheduled for January 25, 2023. There will be a presentation from 7:00-8:00 pm followed by an open house from 8:00-9:00 pm at the Barnstable High School Main Cafeteria, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis MA 02601. Live Portuguese interpretation will be available at the meeting. It is recommended that attendees enter the High School from the gymnasium entrance. If you want to help shape the future of downtown Hyannis, put this date in your calendar!

Feedback gathered through this event will directly inform the street designs that could be built in the near future. By participating in this process, members of the community can be a part of designing the future Hyannis streetscape.

Your input is critical to successfully complete this transportation and streetscape study. The Town looks forward to seeing you on January 25th.   If you have any questions regarding this meeting please contact Elizabeth Jenkins, Director of Planning and Development at elizabeth.jenkins@town.barnstable.ma.us or 508-862-4678.
