Old King’s Highway Historic District Committee: Upcoming Election
An election of Committee members for the Old King’s Highway Historic District Committee will occur Tuesday November 28th between 7:00-8:00 PM at the Barnstable West Barnstable Elementary School located at
2463 Main St, West Barnstable, MA 02668.
Background:
The Old King’s Highway Regional Historic District was established in 1973 and is the largest historic district in the nation which spans from Sandwich to Orleans. The Town of Barnstable local district is defined as north of the Mid-Cape Highway (Route 6) within the Town of Barnstable.
The Town of Barnstable’s Old King’s Highway Historic District Committee reviews applications for any change to the exterior of buildings and structures, fences and signs, as well as new construction and demolition. The Committee considers the historical value and significance of existing buildings, and all applications are reviewed for general design, proportion of building elements, texture, materials, color and overall aesthetic appropriateness to the historic integrity of the district, neighborhood and setting.
Meetings occur twice monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month and commence at 6:30 PM. The membership will be for the duration of a 4-year term. All members must be registered to vote in the Town of Barnstable.

Deadlines for Submission:
A Nomination Paper is required to be completed in order to run for this election. Below is a summary of the deadlines for this submission. The process includes obtaining a Nomination Paper, having the names certified by the Town Clerk and then submitting a completed Nomination Paper to Planning & Development staff who will share all Nomination Papers with the OKH Clerk. You must reside within the Old King’s Highway Historic District, which encompasses all properties located north of the Mid-Cape Highway (Route 6), to submit a Nomination Paper.
Nomination Paper Period
- A Nomination Paper can be picked up at Town Hall, 367 Main Street Hyannis, from the Town Clerk’s Office (2ndFloor) or Planning & Development (3rd Floor) between the following dates:
- Friday October 6th – Friday October 20th
Submission to Town Clerk
- For a Nomination Paper to be complete, the names must be certified by the Town Clerk. The deadline for submission to the Town Clerk is:
- Monday October 23rd
Deadline for Submission to the OKH Clerk
- Complete Nomination Papers must be submitted to Planning & Development by:
- Friday October 27th
