EIGHT HIKES FOR ALL AGES GUIDED BY COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Members of the Town of Barnstable’s Land Acquisition and Preservation Committee (LAPC) are ready to lead eight guided hikes along some of the most pristine panoramic backdrops in Barnstable’s villages during the annual Spring Walking Weekend event taking place Friday through Sunday, June 3 – 5, 2022.  Coinciding with National Trails Day on Saturday, June 4, there will be some special new excursions along wooded pathways, sandy beaches and even sidewalks to the sea!

FRIDAY, JUNE 3, 2022

NATIVE POLLINATOR GARDENS OF MASS AUDUBON’S LONG PASTURE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Beginning Time:  9:00 am

Approximate Length/Time to Complete:  1.5 miles/2 hours

Starting Point of Walk:  Long Pasture Discovery Center – 345 Bone Hill Road, Cummaquid MA 02637

Join us as we introduce Long Pasture’s varied native gardens. These gardens have been created to support local wildlife diversity, attract and conserve pollinators including bees, birds and butterflies, and promote sustainable and organic gardening practices to our community.

Rating of Terrain and Pace:  Easy

Directions: From Barnstable Village, head east on Route 6A, 2 miles to Bone Hill Rd.  Follow Bone Hill Rd. to last driveway on left, and park in Sanctuary Parking Lot.  Meet at Discovery Center.

MARSTONS MILLS RIVER HEADWATERS RESTORATION WALK

Beginning Time:  10:00 am

Approximate Length/Time to Complete: 0.75 mile/1 hour

Starting Point of Walk:  948 River Road

Join Barnstable Clean Water Coalition’s Casey Chatelain on a tour of BCWC’s historic 1800s cranberry bogs at the headwaters of the Marstons Mills River. Learn about ongoing wetlands restoration work in the area and how this bog system is an opportunity to improve water quality in the Three Bays estuary. Bring sunblock or a hat as there is minimal shade along the route.

Rating of Terrain and Pace:  Flat terrain at an easy pace.

Directions:  Pull into the shared driveway at 948 River Road. Stay straight until reaching the cranberry bogs.

CONNECTING TRAILS AND SIDEWALKS IN BARNSTABLE VILLAGE

Beginning Time:  4:00 pm

Approximate Length/Time to Complete: 2.5 miles/2 hours

Starting Point of Walk:  Old Jail Lane Trailhead in Barnstable Village.

This hike will follow the woodland trails and sidewalks east through Barnstable Village.

Rating of Terrain and Pace:  Moderate Pace and Terrain

Directions: Route 6A or Phinney’s Lane to Old Jail Lane to sign for Old Jail Lane Preserve.

SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 2022

COTUIT: SANTUIT PRESERVE – JIM GOULD MEMORIAL WALK

Beginning Time:     8:00 am

Approximate Length/Time to Complete:  2 miles/1.5 hours

Starting Point of Walk:  Santuit/Newtown Rd.

During this walk you will see abandoned cranberry bogs, scenic vistas around the pond, a herring run with restored fish ladder and dam. Once slated for development consisting of residences and a golf courses, this open space is now shared with the Towns of Barnstable and Mashpee.

Rating of Terrain and Pace:  Moderate. Route can be adjusted to accommodate all.

Directions:  Take Rte. 28 to Santuit/Newtown Rd. heading North. Proceed to small turn-out area by a yellow gate on the left hand side of the road. Opposite Lovell’s Pond boat ramp.

CROCKER NECK/COTUIT: LADY SLIPPER HUNT AND HIKE

Beginning Time:     10:00 am

Approximate Length/Time to Complete:   1.5 miles/1.5 hours

Starting Point of Walk: Crocker Neck Conservation Area Cotuit. Meet at the second gate sign “Crocker Neck Conservation Area”

Join Barnstable Land Trust and Professor Gil Newton on walk through the diverse ecosystems of Crocker Neck in search of spring’s most glamorous flower: the pink lady slipper! Gil, a local ecologist and author, will help us search for these delicate wild orchids that thrive in pine and pine/oak woodlands, while also exploring the wonders of a salt marsh and estuary. Learn all about these ecosystems and the flora and fauna that thrive here. Preregistration is required at www.blt.org. Location is provided to registrants.  Event will be cancelled or postponed in case of rain or severe weather.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIFFERENT WILDLIFE HABITATS

Beginning Time:     3:30 pm

Approximate Length/Time to Complete: 2 miles/1.5 hours

Starting Point of Walk: Seabury Farm Trailhead in West Barnstable

Hike through open fields and mixed pine/oak forest.

Rating of Terrain and Pace: Moderate Pace

Directions: South side of Route 6A, just West of Railroad Bridge.

SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2022

HYANNIS: THE MULTI-USE PATH TO THE BEACH

Beginning Time:     9:00 am

Approximate/Time to Complete: 2.5 miles/2 hours

Starting Point of Walk: JFK Museum, Main St. Hyannis. Follow the sidewalks and the new multi-use path to the Hyannis beaches on Nantucket Sound.

Rating of Terrain and Pace: Level. Some sand walking. Moderate pace.

Directions: Main Street to JFK Museum. Park in the town parking lot behind the museum.

BARNSTABLE VILLAGE: OLD NECK LANE LOOP

Beginning Time:     2:00 pm

Approximate Length of Walk/Time to Complete: 1 mile/1 hour

Starting Point of Walk: PARKING LOT #7 AT Cape Cod Community College

A walk along the moraine in Barnstable. Rock and boulders show evidence of the glacier that formed Cape Cod. Path leads onto the unpaved part of Old Neck Road, now a walking path that was cut off when Route 6 was built. Look for mushrooms along trail!

ABOUT THE LAPC

The Town Council created the Land Acquisition & Preservation Committee (LAPC) in 2005.  This Committee meets monthly and is charged  with recommending parcels of land for acquisition to the Community Preservation Committee (CPC); leveraging in conjunction with the Town Manager and the Town Council, funding other than Community Preservation Act funding, for purchase of land, reviewing conservation restrictions before Town Council approval,  keeping the Open Space and Recreation Plan and open space section of the Comprehensive Plan updated and current, and implementing the approved Cape Cod Pathways Plan.  Additionally, a member of the Land Acquisition and Preservation Committee serves as the Town’s representative on the Santuit Management Committee.  LAPC assists Town departments in the management of the Land Bank lands acquired under the Land Bank Act and its provisions.  For more information about the LAPC, please call 508-862-4678.
